Coimbatore is seeing attention on civic infrastructure, public health and industrial issues as city authorities and business groups work to address several local concerns. One of the latest developments involves Avinashi Road, where the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation plans to construct new bus shelters and repair damaged ones. Several shelters had been removed during construction of the GD Naidu flyover, leaving commuters exposed to the weather.
Public health is another major focus. The Coimbatore corporation has intensified mosquito-control and sanitation drives to reduce dengue risks. Officials are targeting mosquito-breeding locations and have begun imposing fines as part of efforts to improve compliance.
Meanwhile, the city’s industrial sector is seeking financial relief. The Federation of Coimbatore Industrial Associations has asked Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation to allow industries to pay additional electricity security deposits in 12 monthly instalments. The organisation says many MSMEs are facing financial pressure and that spreading the payments could ease their immediate burden.
Environmental concerns are also making headlines. The Madras High Court has ordered the Coimbatore corporation to halt Smart City development activities around Ukkadam Periyakulam and Valankulam lakes, citing concerns over damage to bird habitats.
