Nepal is preparing to seek around $5 billion in international assistance for the first phase of reconstruction following the disaster. Officials plan to approach institutions including the World Bank and Asian Development Bank, as well as foreign governments and diplomatic missions.
The government is presenting the disaster as a climate-justice issue, arguing that Nepal contributes relatively little to global greenhouse-gas emissions but is highly exposed to climate-related disasters.
The damage has created a major financial challenge for Nepal because reconstruction costs are expected to be extremely high compared with the country’s annual budget.
Drones Deliver Emergency Supplies
With many roads and bridges destroyed, Nepal’s army has turned to drones to deliver essential supplies to isolated communities.
The drones are being used to transport food, medicine and fuel where conventional transport is difficult. The army is reportedly operating four large cargo drones, with each capable of carrying up to 60 kilograms.
Drones are also being used for reconnaissance and other emergency operations as authorities continue searching for missing people.
DNA Identification Efforts Continue
Nepal is receiving assistance from forensic teams from India, China, Japan, Singapore and South Korea to speed up DNA collection and identification of victims.
The Foreign Ministry has asked families of missing people to contact relevant police authorities and provide DNA profiles where possible.
