Vanathi Srinivasan is back in the political spotlight in Tamil Nadu after raising strong objections to the proposed construction of a new Secretariat and Assembly complex at Pattinapakkam in Chennai. The BJP leader has argued that the proposed location could create long-term problems related to space, traffic and urban planning.
According to her latest statement, a new administrative complex should be planned with a much longer perspective instead of focusing only on immediate requirements. She has suggested developing a new administrative city on at least 3,000 acres near Chennai, bringing together the Secretariat, Assembly and other important government offices.
Vanathi said the state should think about whether a proposed site can meet Tamil Nadu’s requirements for decades rather than having to search for another location after a relatively short period.
Pattinapakkam Secretariat Project Becomes Political Issue
The proposed Pattinapakkam project involves around 25.55 acres and has been reported as a ₹1,200-crore plan for a new Secretariat and Assembly complex. Vanathi has criticised the proposal, pointing to concerns about the limited space and traffic conditions in the area.
She also referred to the earlier Secretariat and Assembly complex developed at the Omandurar Government Estate during the previous DMK government. Her argument is that the experience of earlier government infrastructure projects should be carefully reviewed before a new major construction project is approved.
The BJP leader has described the Secretariat as an important symbol of the state and argued that any new complex should be designed to serve Tamil Nadu for many decades.
Vanathi Calls for Long-Term Urban Planning
Vanathi Srinivasan’s proposal goes beyond simply opposing the Pattinapakkam location. She has suggested creating a dedicated administrative city close to Chennai with sufficient land for government institutions and future expansion.
