Delhi and the wider NCR region are seeing a noticeable increase in H1N1 influenza cases, prompting health authorities to strengthen surveillance and hospital preparedness. Doctors have reported a rise in patients experiencing flu-like symptoms, while some severe cases have involved breathing difficulties and falling oxygen levels.
Government data cited by India Today showed that Delhi had recorded 1,777 H1N1 cases by August 20, compared with 229 during the same period last year. The increase has occurred during the monsoon season, when respiratory infections can spread more easily.
Despite the rise, health officials have said there is no reason for panic. The Indian Council of Medical Research has clarified that the virus currently circulating is the familiar H1N1 pdm09 strain and is not a newly emerging strain.
Health experts recommend maintaining good hand hygiene, covering the mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing and avoiding close contact with others when feeling unwell.
People with severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, persistent high fever or worsening illness should seek medical attention promptly. Older adults, young children and people with certain underlying conditions may face a higher risk of complications.
