FSSAI Proposes Warning Labels for High-Sugar and High-Salt Foods

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has proposed front-of-pack warning labels for packaged foods containing high levels of sugar, salt and saturated fat. The proposal is intended to make nutritional information easier for consumers to understand while shopping.

Under the proposal, packaged foods could carry prominent warning symbols identifying products as “High Sugar,” “High Salt” or “High Fat.” Highly sweetened beverages could also receive a specific warning.

The initiative follows concerns from public health experts that conventional nutrition information can be difficult for consumers to interpret quickly. Clear warning labels could allow shoppers to identify products containing excessive amounts of nutrients associated with health risks.

The issue has also been discussed before the Supreme Court. Earlier proposals involving nutrition ratings faced criticism because products high in individual nutrients of concern could still receive an overall favourable rating.

Experts have welcomed the move toward clearer warnings but have also raised questions about possible loopholes in the proposed system.

If implemented effectively, front-of-pack warnings could influence consumer choices and encourage food manufacturers to reformulate products.

The proposal represents another step in India’s ongoing efforts to address diet-related health concerns and improve public understanding of packaged-food nutrition.
