Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma has created history by becoming the first woman non-medical officer in the Indian Defence Services to attain the rank of Air Vice Marshal or equivalent.
The landmark appointment was announced by the Indian Air Force as Sharma assumed charge as Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Education) at Air Headquarters on September 1, 2026.
Her elevation represents a significant milestone in the growing participation of women in India’s armed forces. While women officers have increasingly taken on senior leadership, operational and command responsibilities, Sharma’s promotion marks a new achievement for women serving in non-medical roles.
Sharma was commissioned into the Indian Air Force Education Branch on June 18, 1994. Over more than three decades, she has served in a variety of assignments at training institutions, field stations, command headquarters and Air Headquarters.
Her career has included work aimed at strengthening cooperation between the armed forces and academic institutions. She played an important role in establishing IAF Chairs of Excellence at IIT Kanpur and Pune University, initiatives designed to encourage collaboration in education and strategic defence-related areas.
Sharma has also achieved another distinction during her career. She became the first woman officer from the Tri-Services to command a Sainik School and served as principal of Sainik School, Kapurthala.
Her latest appointment is particularly significant because the Education Branch plays an important role in professional development and academic training within the Air Force.
