The incident began when Arunima posted a distress message on social media on September 14 saying that she was in trouble in Bamyan and seeking help connecting with the Indian Embassy. An initial message appeared to indicate that she had been arrested by “Mujahideen” because she did not have an official letter.
However, as more details emerged, Arunima provided a clarification about what happened. Reports based on her account indicate that she was threatened with arrest rather than ultimately being arrested. She said authorities questioned her because she was travelling alone without a male companion or an authorised guide.
What Happened to Backpacker Arunima in Afghanistan?
According to Arunima’s account, she reached Bamyan at around 7pm after travelling on a truck. It was already dark when she arrived, and local people approached her because she was travelling alone.
Authorities subsequently checked her passport, visa and travel documents. Arunima said officials discovered that she had entered Afghanistan on August 27 and had been travelling alone since then. She was reportedly told that this violated local rules and that she could be arrested.
Arunima said she had already experienced difficulties obtaining travel permission earlier in Jalalabad. According to her, authorities refused to issue a permit because she was travelling without a male companion, known in Islamic terminology as a mahram, or an official guide.
Local Man Helps Resolve the Situation
The situation reportedly became frightening for the vlogger after officials questioned her through a translation application and examined her documents.
Arunima said she contacted an English-speaking local man who had helped her earlier during the journey. He returned and spoke with the authorities on her behalf.
According to her account, officials wanted her to obtain a permit and arrange an official guide. She also said they demanded payment of about 10,000 Afghanis and discussed an additional payment connected with the absence of required authorisation.
After discussions, Arunima said authorities eventually allowed her to continue her journey toward the Uzbekistan border rather than detaining her.
