Bihar Flood Situation
Bihar’s flood crisis continues to affect large numbers of residents. A latest state-level assessment reported that around 41.45 lakh people across 14 districts have been affected, with 517 panchayats still facing flood-related problems.
There has been some relief as the Ganga’s water level has fallen at several locations between Patna and Munger. However, the river has risen again at Kahalgaon in Bhagalpur, demonstrating that the situation remains unstable.
Floodwater has also affected transport and daily life in several communities. In some locations, residents continue to depend on boats to move between villages and access essential services.
Health Concerns Increase
As floodwater begins to recede, health officials are warning about another potential challenge. Stagnant water, contaminated drinking water and accumulated waste can increase the risk of waterborne and mosquito-borne diseases.
Authorities are particularly concerned about illnesses including diarrhoea, typhoid, cholera, dengue, malaria and leptospirosis. Relief camps also continue to require essential supplies, including safe drinking water and other basic necessities.

The India Meteorological Department has forecast further rainfall across Bihar and neighbouring states. Heavy rain is also expected in parts of Jharkhand, Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal.
The weather system developing over the Bay of Bengal is particularly important. IMD says a low-pressure area is likely to form over the north Bay of Bengal and surrounding areas, potentially strengthening rainfall activity in eastern India.
Odisha Faces Heavy Rain Risk
Odisha is another state requiring close attention. The latest forecast indicates isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy rain possible in some locations. The warning is valid during the period when the developing Bay of Bengal system could become more organised.
Heavy rainfall can quickly increase the risk of waterlogging, river swelling and flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas.
