Chennai: Tamil Nadu Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin launched a strong attack on the state government during Assembly proceedings on Thursday, September 3, raising questions over law and order, governance and the performance of the ruling TVK administration.
Udhayanidhi, a senior DMK leader, questioned Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay over the government’s handling of the state’s police and law-and-order portfolio. During the debate on the demands for grants for the Police Department, he sought answers from the Chief Minister on what he described as serious concerns surrounding the state’s security situation.
The Opposition leader also criticised the government’s performance since it came to power. According to his remarks in the Assembly, 116 days had passed since the new administration took office, but he alleged that it had not introduced a new scheme while also failing to clearly adopt or discontinue programmes introduced by the previous DMK government.
Udhayanidhi compared the previous DMK administration with the current TVK government, saying Tamil Nadu had been moving in “top gear” under the DMK but was now moving in “reverse gear.” His comments triggered a heated exchange between members of the ruling party and the Opposition.
The Assembly confrontation intensified after Chief Minister Vijay responded that he would answer questions raised by members when he returned to the House on Monday. Vijay also referred to members leaving the Assembly, prompting Udhayanidhi to respond with a pointed remark after the Chief Minister left the proceedings.
The latest confrontation highlights the increasingly sharp political contest between the DMK and the newly established TVK government. With the Assembly session continuing, issues involving policing, public safety, government schemes and administrative performance are expected to remain major subjects of political debate.
Udhayanidhi’s role as Leader of Opposition has also placed him at the centre of the Assembly’s scrutiny of the new government. His recent interventions have included raising the concerns of sanitation workers and challenging the government over several policy and administrative matters.
The political exchanges in the Tamil Nadu Assembly are being closely watched as both the ruling government and Opposition prepare for further debates. With major policy questions and governance issues expected to dominate upcoming proceedings, Udhayanidhi Stalin is likely to remain one of the key voices challenging the government’s decisions.
