Lucknow, September 2, 2026: Flood conditions have worsened in several parts of Uttar Pradesh following heavy rainfall and rising river levels, affecting thousands of residents and disrupting transportation, schools and daily life.
Around 20,000 people have been affected by flooding in Ballia, while two people were reported dead in Sitapur and two girls were missing in Ghazipur. Rescue and relief teams have been deployed in several districts as water continues to enter residential areas.
The Ganga has crossed its warning level in Varanasi, prompting authorities to closely monitor river conditions. Some lanes have been flooded, and boat services have been introduced in affected areas to help residents move around.
In Lakhimpur Kheri, authorities ordered schools to remain closed up to Class 8 because of the rising water levels. Railway services were also disrupted on parts of the Mailani-Nanpara route after water seepage was reported near railway stations.
The situation along the Nepal border has added another concern. Rising levels of the Mohana and Karnali rivers have affected villages in the Tikunia area, including locations close to Dudhwa National Park.
Officials in Mirzapur also took precautionary action after water levels rose rapidly at the Aharoura reservoir. Two gates were opened to release approximately 700 cusecs of water. Authorities said the controlled release was intended to prevent flooding in low-lying areas.
Sonbhadra has also reported waterlogging after an embankment breach at a pond in Belwania village. Water entered the homes of 11 families, forcing authorities to evacuate residents to a nearby panchayat building.
Local administrations have arranged food and essential supplies for affected families, while drainage and medical assistance efforts are continuing.
Schools in Sonbhadra were also scheduled to remain closed because of the weather situation. Officials are monitoring rainfall and river levels to determine whether further closures or evacuations will be necessary.
The latest flooding comes as northern India experiences another active phase of monsoon weather. Meteorologists expect additional rainfall in several areas during the coming days.
For residents living close to rivers and reservoirs, authorities have urged caution. People in vulnerable areas are being encouraged to follow evacuation instructions and avoid crossing flooded roads or waterways.
The situation remains dynamic, with rainfall and river levels being monitored closely. More disruption is possible if heavy rain continues across the region.
