• Pig Kidney Keeps Patient Off Dialysis for Nine Months
New Delhi: Xenotransplantation has returned to the global medical spotlight after a genetically modified pig kidney successfully provided kidney function to a 66-year-old man for a record nine months before he received a human kidney transplant.
The case, reported in The Lancet, is being described as a major development because the pig kidney served as a temporary “bridge” to a human transplant. The patient, Tim Andrews, had end-stage kidney disease and had previously spent more than two years on dialysis.
• What Is Xenotransplantation?
Xenotransplantation refers to transplanting cells, tissues or organs from one species into another. Researchers have increasingly focused on genetically modified pigs because their organs are broadly comparable in size to human organs.
The major challenge is rejection. The human immune system recognises animal tissue as foreign and can rapidly attack the transplanted organ. Scientists therefore use genetic modifications designed to make pig organs more compatible with humans.
• 271 Days Without Dialysis
In the latest case, the genetically engineered kidney functioned for 271 days, allowing Andrews to remain free from dialysis before the pig kidney eventually failed. He subsequently received a kidney from a deceased human donor, which reportedly functioned successfully during follow-up.
Researchers also reported that the patient did not develop detectable antibodies against the pig kidney that would have complicated his later human transplant. No pig viruses or other pig pathogens were detected during the reported period.
• Why the Development Matters to India
The breakthrough is particularly relevant to India because the country faces a severe shortage of donor organs. Government data showed 89,839 people were on the national organ-transplant waiting list as of March 3, 2026, while more than 20,000 organ transplants were performed during 2025.
Kidneys account for the largest share of India’s transplant demand. A reliable xenotransplant option could eventually provide another source of organs for patients who face long waiting periods.
• Indian Researchers Are Studying Xenotransplantation
Researchers at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh have examined xenotransplantation as a potential response to the growing mismatch between kidney demand and donor availability.
Researchers at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi are also studying complications associated with pig-kidney xenotransplantation. A September 2026 publication examined persistent proteinuria as a potential challenge in future clinical xenotransplantation.
• Experts Urge Caution
Despite the promising results, xenotransplantation is not yet a routine treatment. Specialists say larger studies and longer follow-up are necessary before such procedures can become widely available.
The latest breakthrough therefore represents an important research milestone rather than an immediate replacement for conventional human organ donation.
