Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma has created a historic milestone in India’s defence services by becoming the first woman non-medical officer in the Indian Armed Forces to achieve the rank of Air Vice Marshal or an equivalent position.
Sharma assumed charge as Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Education) at Air Headquarters on September 1. Her elevation marks another significant step in the growing representation of women in senior positions across India’s military establishment.
The Indian Air Force highlighted her achievement as an important moment in the continuing journey of women officers in the armed forces. Sharma has completed more than three decades of distinguished service since being commissioned into the IAF Education Branch in June 1994.
Throughout her career, she has served in training establishments, field stations, command headquarters and Air Headquarters. Her work has included initiatives aimed at strengthening links between the armed forces and academic institutions.
One of her notable contributions involved helping establish IAF Chairs of Excellence at IIT Kanpur and Pune University. These initiatives were designed to encourage cooperation between academic institutions and the defence sector.
Sharma had previously achieved another distinction when she became the first woman officer from the three services to command a Sainik School. She served as principal of Sainik School Kapurthala.
Her latest appointment comes as the Indian military continues expanding opportunities for women officers in leadership and command positions. Over recent years, women have increasingly taken on responsibilities in areas that were traditionally dominated by male officers.
As Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Education), Sharma will now oversee important educational responsibilities within the Air Force. Her career is expected to inspire younger officers and students considering careers in India’s defence services.
Her achievement is being viewed not only as an individual success but also as a symbol of the changing role of women in India’s military leadership.
