New Delhi, September 2, 2026: Delhi-NCR is preparing for another spell of heavy monsoon rainfall, with the India Meteorological Department issuing a red alert for parts of the national capital on Wednesday. The weather system is expected to bring periods of intense rain, thunderstorms and lightning across Delhi and surrounding areas.
Cloudy conditions had already covered the capital after showers were reported in several parts of Delhi on Tuesday evening. The latest forecast indicates that rainfall activity could continue through the day, with some areas receiving moderate to heavy showers.
The IMD has warned that the rain could create waterlogging and traffic problems, particularly in low-lying areas. Commuters have been advised to plan their journeys carefully because sudden heavy showers can slow traffic and affect road conditions.
Temperatures are also expected to remain relatively moderate because of persistent cloud cover. The maximum temperature in Delhi is forecast to remain around 32-34 degrees Celsius, while the minimum could stay between 24 and 26 degrees.
The weather system is being influenced by a well-marked low-pressure area located over West Jharkhand and adjoining regions. The system is expected to move west-northwestwards across parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
At the same time, the monsoon trough is passing through areas including Ferozpur, Delhi and Lucknow before extending toward the Bay of Bengal. The interaction between these weather systems is increasing rainfall activity across northern India.
The IMD has also forecast heavy rainfall across Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi between September 2 and 5. Thunderstorms and lightning are possible in several locations during the period.
The rainfall could become more widespread on September 3 and 4. Residents of Delhi, Noida and Gurugram may experience temporary disruptions if intense showers occur over short periods.
Authorities are expected to remain alert for waterlogging, drainage problems and traffic congestion. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall and follow official weather advisories.
The latest spell highlights the unpredictable nature of this year’s monsoon. While some parts of northern India urgently need additional rainfall, excessive rain over urban areas can create significant challenges.
For Delhi-NCR residents, the immediate priority will be staying safe, monitoring weather updates and allowing additional travel time during the wet spell.
