The word mathematician is receiving renewed attention in India and around the world as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly involved in solving difficult mathematical problems. The latest debate follows OpenAI’s claim that an unreleased AI system made major progress on the Navier–Stokes existence and smoothness problem, one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems.

The development has triggered a wider discussion about whether AI can genuinely produce new mathematical knowledge and how such results should be checked by human mathematicians. The Navier–Stokes problem concerns the behaviour of fluids and has remained unresolved for around 90 years.

OpenAI said its system used thousands of AI agents working together for an extended period. However, the result still requires scrutiny by mathematicians before it can be considered a formally established solution.

Indian Scientists Connected to Navier–Stokes Research

The latest development has also highlighted the work of Indian scientists Nishant Singh and S Sridhar, whose 2017 research on exact solutions to the Navier–Stokes equations was cited in OpenAI’s paper.

Singh, now an associate professor at the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, and Sridhar, professor emeritus at the Raman Research Institute, had published research titled Plane shearing waves of arbitrary form: Exact solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations. Their work is among the references cited in OpenAI’s reported 166-page document.

Their involvement demonstrates how established mathematical and scientific research can remain relevant decades later when new computational methods are developed.

AI Creates Debate Among Mathematicians

The AI breakthrough has also generated controversy. New York University mathematician Tristan Buckmaster has questioned whether OpenAI’s system may have benefited from information related to his work with Levent Alpoge.

OpenAI has denied accessing their private work and said its researchers and AI agents did not see their research before it was publicly released. At the same time, the company acknowledged that it could not completely rule out de-identified product data being used to improve its models.

The disagreement has raised important questions about research ethics, AI training data, attribution and the standards required to verify computer-generated mathematical arguments.

IIT Kanpur Mathematician Receives National Recognition

India’s mathematics research community has also received positive news this week. Professor BV Rathish Kumar, from the Department of Mathematics at IIT Kanpur, has been elected a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy for 2026.

He is among five IIT Kanpur scientists recognised for significant contributions to science and technology. His research includes numerical methods for complex flow analysis as well as applications of AI, machine learning and deep learning in areas such as cardiovascular flows, neuro-imaging and cancer modelling.

The recognition highlights how modern mathematics is increasingly connected with engineering, medicine, artificial intelligence and computational science.

Indian Students Win International Mathematics Award

Mathematical modelling is also attracting attention among India’s younger generation. Four Indian students from Pune and Mumbai won a Meritorious Award at the 2026 International Mathematical Modelling Challenge.

The students developed a mathematical model focused on protecting wildlife in Namibia’s Etosha National Park. Their model considered threats such as poaching, wildfires and human-wildlife conflict while attempting to determine how limited conservation resources could be allocated efficiently.

The achievement demonstrates that mathematics is not limited to classroom calculations. Mathematical modelling can support decisions in environmental protection, healthcare, economics, engineering and public policy.
