Google’s birthday: September 27 is widely recognized as Google’s birthday, and the date has become an annual occasion for the technology company to celebrate its history with special Google Doodles and other activities. In 2026, the date marks another anniversary of one of the world’s most widely used internet companies.
However, Google’s history has a small twist. Google says the company was incorporated on September 4, 1998, but it has celebrated its birthday on September 27 for more than two decades. The company itself has acknowledged that the exact date of its founding has been debated.
Google’s Birthday Today
September 27 is the date most closely associated with Google’s birthday celebration. Google has used the occasion for special Doodles, animations and retrospectives highlighting the company’s development.
Google’s official Doodle collection also maintains a dedicated category for “Google’s Birthday,” showing how the anniversary has become part of the company’s long-running Doodle tradition.
Google’s birthday celebrations have previously included nostalgic designs featuring earlier versions of the company’s famous logo. In 2025, Google celebrated its 27th birthday with a Doodle featuring its original 1998 logo.
When Was Google Founded?
Google’s corporate history officially dates back to September 4, 1998, when Google Inc. was incorporated. The company was created by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who were then Stanford University students.
Before Google became a company, Page and Brin had been working on a search-engine research project at Stanford. The project was initially known as BackRub and focused on analyzing relationships between websites.
Google later developed into a search engine designed to help people find relevant information across the rapidly expanding World Wide Web.
Google itself has described September 1998 as the month when the company was born, while noting that its formal incorporation took place on September 4 and that its birthday celebration has traditionally been held on September 27.
Who Founded Google?
Google was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin.
The two met at Stanford University in the 1990s and eventually worked together on technology for organizing information on the internet. Their research became the foundation of Google’s search technology.
The company initially operated on a much smaller scale than today’s global technology business. Google later expanded beyond web search into products and services including Gmail, Google Maps, Android, YouTube, Chrome and Google Cloud.
Why Is September 27 Called Google’s Birthday?
The reason September 27 became Google’s traditional birthday is not completely straightforward. Google’s official history acknowledges that the company’s exact founding date is sometimes debated.
Google was incorporated on September 4, 1998, but the company began celebrating its anniversary on September 27. Google says it has followed the September 27 birthday tradition for more than a decade, making the date familiar to users around the world.
This means people searching “When is Google’s birthday?” may encounter both September 4 and September 27. September 4 refers to the company’s incorporation, while September 27 is the date associated with Google’s traditional birthday celebration.
Google Birthday Doodle
One of the most recognizable parts of Google’s birthday celebrations is the Google Doodle.
Doodles are customized versions of the Google logo that appear on the company’s homepage to recognize important events, people, anniversaries and cultural occasions. Google says the first Doodle appeared in 1998, before the company was officially incorporated.
Birthday Doodles have become a way for Google to look back at its history. The 2023 25th-birthday Doodle, for example, featured an animation showing versions of the Google logo from the company’s first 25 years.
Google’s Growth Over the Years
Google’s journey from a university research project to a global technology company has included major developments in search, advertising, mobile technology, cloud computing and artificial intelligence.
In 2015, Google became part of Alphabet, its parent company, as part of a corporate restructuring. Google remains Alphabet’s largest business.
The company’s mission has also remained focused on making information more accessible. Google has said its mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.
