Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek on August 31. The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations, expanding trade and discussing the continuing situation in West Asia.
During the talks, Modi said India wants to expand and diversify its trade basket with Iran. The two leaders also discussed regional developments and the importance of maintaining peace and stability.
India reiterated its long-standing relationship with Iran and stressed the need for dialogue and diplomacy to address regional disputes. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the discussions also covered the security of trade and commercial routes.
The meeting comes at a time when tensions in West Asia are creating concerns for global energy markets, shipping and international trade. India has consistently highlighted the importance of keeping commercial routes open and secure.
Modi also met Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan during the SCO summit. Both sides discussed opportunities to expand cooperation in defence, information technology, space, education and pharmaceuticals.
The diplomatic engagements highlight India’s effort to maintain strong relationships with key countries while supporting dialogue and regional stability.
