India and Russia continue to strengthen their relationship across energy, defence and trade, but the growing trade imbalance between the two countries has emerged as an important issue. Recent India Today reporting highlighted that bilateral trade has crossed $100 billion, while India’s trade deficit with Russia has widened significantly.
India’s imports from Russia have been driven largely by energy purchases, particularly crude oil. Russian energy supplies have become an important component of India’s strategy to maintain energy security and manage costs.
At the same time, New Delhi wants to increase Indian exports to Russia and expand access for Indian businesses. A more balanced trade relationship could benefit sectors such as pharmaceuticals, agriculture, engineering products and other manufactured goods.
Defence cooperation also remains a major part of the relationship. India and Russia have maintained long-standing military ties, although India has increasingly diversified its defence procurement in recent years.
The two countries also continue to cooperate through multilateral organisations, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and BRICS.
India’s approach reflects an effort to preserve its strategic partnership with Moscow while maintaining independent foreign-policy priorities. The coming months are likely to focus on expanding exports, securing energy supplies and managing the growing trade gap.
