• Bangladesh Secures Major Eastern Refinery Financing
Dhaka: Bangladesh is seeing several important developments across energy, the economy, national affairs and international relations as September begins. Bangladesh has secured around $1 billion in financing from the Islamic Development Bank for the modernization and expansion of Eastern Refinery. The project is expected to increase the refinery’s annual crude-oil processing capacity by about three million tonnes. The government is also working on measures to improve the country’s electricity and fuel situation. Officials have indicated that the power and energy situation is expected to improve, while new initiatives are being considered to strengthen domestic energy infrastructure.
• Rooftop Solar Gets New Incentive
Renewable energy is another important area of focus. The government has announced a special incentive package for rooftop solar systems equipped with batteries. The tariff for electricity generated through these systems has been set at Tk 10.50 per unit under the new incentive arrangement. The initiative is intended to encourage investment in rooftop solar and improve energy security.

Bangladesh’s important ready-made garment sector is also facing challenges. Parliament was informed that 402 garment factories closed between July 2023 and June 2026. Of those, 282 belonged to BGMEA and 120 to BKMEA. Global market pressures, domestic difficulties and rising operating costs have contributed to challenges for manufacturers.

Business leaders are calling for sector-specific plans as Bangladesh prepares for graduation from the least developed country category. Industry representatives say targeted policies will be necessary to help different sectors remain competitive during the transition.

Bangladesh has also provided US$1 million to Nepal following devastating floods and mudslides. The assistance will support relief and recovery efforts in affected areas.
