Pension latest news 2026: Pensioners across India are following several important developments related to pension payments, Dearness Relief (DR), EPFO coverage and pension-related services. In the latest update, Central Government employees and pensioners were scheduled to receive their September 2026 salary and pension payments early on September 25, ahead of a three-day nationwide bank strike planned for September 28 to 30.
At the same time, the government has announced changes affecting social-security coverage, while the Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare continues work on reducing pending pension grievances.
Pension Payment Latest Update September 2026
The Centre arranged early disbursement of September salaries and pensions because of the proposed bank strike. The advance payment was intended to help prevent disruption to pensioners and government employees during the strike period. Any necessary adjustments arising from the advance disbursement are expected to be reflected in subsequent payroll processing.

Dearness Relief for Pensioners
Another important pension development is the increase in Dearness Relief (DR) for Central Government pensioners.
The Union Cabinet approved an additional 2% instalment of Dearness Allowance and Dearness Relief with effect from January 1, 2026. The increase takes the applicable DA/DR rate from 58% to 60% of Basic Pay/Pension.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the decision is expected to benefit around 68.27 lakh pensioners along with approximately 50.46 lakh Central Government employees. The additional financial impact for DA and DR together was estimated at ₹6,791.24 crore annually.
EPFO Pension Latest News 2026
Pension-related social security is also changing for workers covered under the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation.
On September 16, 2026, the Union Cabinet approved an increase in the EPFO wage ceiling for mandatory coverage from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month. The government said the move could bring more than 51 lakh additional employees into mandatory EPFO coverage.
The expanded coverage includes access to statutory social-security provisions, including pension protection under the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS), subject to the applicable scheme rules.
The government said EPFO currently administers EPF, EPS and EDLI schemes. The latest figures cited by the government show around 82 lakh pensioners under EPS.
Pension Grievance Update
The Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare has also been working to resolve long-pending pension complaints.
Under Special Campaign 3, which ran from July 7 to August 31, 2026, the department reported that 2,306 long-pending pension grievances had been redressed. The campaign focused on pension-related claims and issues, with particular attention to improving access through the CPENGRAMS grievance system.
A further campaign, Special Campaign 6.0, is scheduled for October 2 to October 31, 2026. The Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare has set targets involving grievance disposal, appeals, records management and measures intended to improve pensioners’ ease of living.
What Pensioners Should Check
Pensioners should regularly check their bank account, pension payment information and official government communications. Those facing payment or pension-record problems can use the appropriate government grievance channels.
Important details to keep updated may include:
- Pension Payment Order (PPO) details
- Bank account information
- Aadhaar and other identification details where applicable
- Life certificate requirements
- Pension-related grievance records
- EPFO account information for EPS members
Pension rules differ depending on whether a person receives a Central Government pension, state pension, EPS pension or another retirement benefit. Therefore, pensioners should verify specific changes with the relevant department rather than relying on social-media claims.
Pension Latest News: What to Watch Next
The next major developments could include further implementation details related to the revised EPFO wage ceiling, pension administration reforms and the October pension-welfare campaign.
For Central Government pensioners, the recently approved 2% increase in Dearness Relief and continuing digital pension services remain important developments. Meanwhile, the expansion of EPFO coverage could bring millions of additional workers into formal retirement and social-security arrangements.
