Chandigarh: Punjab cricket is entering an exciting new phase with the launch of the inaugural Sher-E-Punjab T20 League, a franchise-based tournament designed to provide emerging players from the state with a stronger platform to develop their skills and attract wider attention.
The tournament, organised by the Punjab Cricket Association, began on August 30 and will continue until September 13. All 27 matches are being played at the PCA IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali, bringing a major domestic T20 competition to one central venue. Six city-based teams are participating in the first season.
The league has also attracted several familiar names from Indian cricket. Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, Arshdeep Singh, Prabhsimran Singh and Ramandeep Singh are among the players associated with the competition. Their presence is expected to give young cricketers valuable experience of playing alongside established professionals.
The opening matches have already produced high-scoring contests. Mohali Kings defeated Amritsar Soormas by five wickets in the tournament opener after chasing 259, while Fazilka Falcons later recorded an eight-wicket victory over Jalandhar Warriors. Bathinda Royals also made an impressive start by beating Mohali Kings by seven wickets.
The latest action has continued to underline the attacking nature of the competition. On September 1, Ludhiana Lions defeated Bathinda Royals by three wickets, while Jalandhar Warriors produced a remarkable chase against Amritsar Soormas.
The tournament is expected to play an important role in identifying Punjab’s next generation of cricketers. Punjab Kings have also joined the league as its “Powered By” sponsor, with the franchise highlighting the importance of creating a clearer pathway from grassroots and state cricket toward the professional level.
For Punjab cricket, the Sher-E-Punjab T20 League represents more than a new competition. It is an opportunity to strengthen the domestic talent pipeline and give ambitious young players a chance to perform in front of a larger cricket audience.
