Climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk has once again made headlines after leading a candle march in Leh to remember those who died during last year’s violent unrest in Ladakh.
The march was held on August 25 as part of a month-long programme commemorating the victims of the September 2025 violence. Wangchuk and other Ladakh civil society groups have called for the findings of the inquiry commission into the incident to be made public.
During the event, Wangchuk said the inquiry report should be released this month. He also highlighted an upcoming meeting involving the Leh Apex Body, Kargil Democratic Alliance and the Central Government, expected to take place in the first week of September.
The discussions are likely to focus on long-standing demands concerning Ladakh’s political and constitutional safeguards. Civil society representatives recently submitted what they described as important and non-negotiable demands to the Centre.
Wangchuk remains a prominent voice on issues affecting Ladakh and education in India. Earlier this year, his 26-day hunger strike in support of student protests also attracted nationwide attention.
His latest activities indicate that he continues to engage with public issues after returning to Ladakh following his prolonged protest.
